For this last journal, we are required to design our book cover for compilation of our journals and scrapbook journal. I had a good time compiling all my works, it was somewhat sentimental looking back at old works and creating an identity for it.
My Book Cover
Through this journal, I learned about the importance of a book cover. I also learned how to design a book cover that based on it's theme and contents. However, I enjoyed doing this journal as you can let it be how crazy as you like.
For this journal activity, we are required to observe, record and elaborate on our five senses experience and perspective in the city. I chose Bukit Bintang, a major shopping district in Kuala Lumpur and see what it has to offer.
Kuala Lumpur is a vibrant and dynamic city. This journal activity enlightened my senses and made me realise many details of the city which I previously missed out.
Besides that, this trip trained me to be more observant. After the trip, I understood more about the problems faced by this city , which includes inefficient public transportation and sinkholes.
At last, I hope that Kuala Lumpur can become more livable by improving its transportation systems.
Conservation is an ethic of resource use, allocation, and protection. Its primary focus is upon maintaining the health of the natural world, its fisheries, habitats, and biological diversity.
In this journal, I learned ways of locating and extracting information effectively. However, nature is precious. Thus, we must appreciate nature by putting an effort to conserve it.
For this journal exercise, i chose to study about the frozen air bubbles. Frozen air bubbles are unique as they are only can been seen in certain places. The frozen air bubbles is beautiful but it's dangerous where the methane in the lake will make a fire burst from the frozen depth.
Through this journal, I learned how to be independent by doing research on my own and not relying on others. Besides, i gained knowledge about the frozen air bubbles and the advantages and disadvantages of the frozen air bubbles.
In this final ENBE project,we focused on the components of a TOWN and the built environment. The challenges will be similar but at a smaller scale than a city.
The Brief
We as the mayor of a town have to come up with a solution to this massive problem, by proposing a new town that's either underground, underwater, floating in the air, floating on the water, on a land next to the a river or sea. The town must be local.
The project is consists two major parts: The individual proposal with video and a group work, that is, to create a model and 3 presentation boards of the town.
PART A: INDIVIDUAL TOWN VIDEO AND PROPOSAL
In this project, I teamed up with Kai Yun, Kailyn and Zhi Fung. After a short discussion with my group members, we decided to choose the town that will floating in the air. Among us, only one town will be selected to proceed to Part B.
My TOWN PROPOSAL
My TOWN VIDEO
PART B: MODEL AND PRESENTATION BOARDS
Kai Yun's town, SNOWFLY is selected for our group. We did a summarized plan for our whole process in Part B, which will aid us throughout the project. Based on the plan, we went around to collect materials. The main material that we are using is PVC which based on the snowflake concept to give a crystal clear effect for the town.
All thanks to our hard work, the model of the town Snowfly is completed!
Our PRESENTATION BOARDS
PRESENTATION DAY
Finally, it's presentation day! After getting feedback from the lecturers, we realised that we did a few terrible mistakes. The font of the text is too small in the boards and the scale for the model is too big.
GROUP PHOTO
Overall, this project was really fun. I am glad to have group members who are extremely cooperative, although we only have four members in our group.
Communication skills played an important role in this project. It is essential to have good communication skills so that members of a team can understand one another.
By doing this project, I learnt a lot about urban development in general. Besides, I learned that having sufficient research and planning before conducting a project is important.
For our first ENBE project, we had explored and experienced the nature during the site visit at Sungai Sedim. In groups, we need to transfer these experiences and information collected from the site onto five info-graphic pop-up posters and a 5-7 minute documentary video. Individually, we are required to produce a scrapbook journal of our experiences and information collected at the site.
The Brief
GROUP
In a group of 5, I teamed up with Lillian, Monnie, Hazel and Shze Hwa. The topc we had chose is "Physical and Natural Characteristics of Nature". We are required to do a comprehensive research on the topic selected with relation to the 10m x 10m site. Back from the trip, we organised ourselves into different jobs.
The aim of the scrapbook journal is to express our personal experiences and thought of a particular knowledge through the collection of photograph or sketches of ideas.
From this project, I learned that interpersonal skills are very important in finishing a project. Group coordination is a difficult task as not all people are free at the same time.
Alongside with that, we learnt the fact that we should have well time management and never do things at the eleventh hour.
I am grateful that all group members are willing to sacrifice their time for this project. In this project, I also learned how to be more organised and productive.
In this final project, we are required to form a group of 2 and find a specific empty land to initiate a small construction project. The size of the land shall not be more than 30m x 40m. Individually, we are required to propose ONE project that serves one of the following purposes:
Recreation area
Commercial area
Industrial area
Agricultural area
Tourism area
Residential area
The Brief
GROUP
For this project, I teamed up with Tian Ji. We conducted a site analysis at our selected site. The site is located at the Jalan Ramin, Bandar Botanic, Klang. After a group discussion, we decided to do individual research for the group tasks which consists of key plan, location plan, site plan, introduction of the site, site context, historical background of the site and site analysis.
INDIVIDUAL
After a short discussion with Tian Ji, I decided to conduct the proposal as rest and recreation area. For individual task, we are required to consist of the basic information such as sketch plan of proposal, sketches of the concepts or images of ideas. Costing and building plan approval process or procedures are counted as extra information.
OVERALL PROJECT PROPOSAL
Verbal communication between members are enhanced throughout this assignment. It is important to have all team members communicate well with one another. Planning a construction project is not easy as there are many things to be considered. This project gives us a slight taste of it.
The primary task of this project is to interview a profession in the construction industry. Each group will a type of consultant or developer from the list. My group got "Architect".
The members of my group are Lucas, Tian Ji, Hazel, Monnie, and Shze Hwa. In this project, we are required to interview a architect and produce a magazine.
We had two architect candidates for our interview. After discussion, we decided to interview Mr. Ong Han Boon as our interviewee for our project magazine. Before proceeding the interview, we had a meeting about what questions should we ask Mr. Ong.
Mr. Ong Han Boon
Mr Ong's office has models of buildings built by his company. We admired them after finishing the interview.
This assignment gave all of us some insight about professionalism. We are grateful that we got the chance to interview Mr. Ong and get to know his personal perspectives. After the interview, I have a better understanding about the profession of an architect.
In our very first Introduction to the Construction Industry project, we are required to form a group with 5 or 6 people. Each group are given different topic as below:
Architect
Interior Architect/Designer
Planner
Product Designer
Quantity Surveyor
Landscape Architect
Civil and Structural Engineer
Mechanical and Electrical Engineer
We are required to study and investigate the roles and responsibilities of that specific profession. We need to generate a presentation using the data collected.
I teamed up with my 4 other group members, Lillian, Shze Hwa, Monnie and Hazel. We got the topic on "Architect". We discussed and divided the topic into five components. Moreover, we did the individual research based on the main five components.
Our PRESENTATION SLIDES
Our PRESENTATION VIDEO
Through this project, I realized that presentation is not just about speaking professionally or showing data. It is also about conveying correct, topic-related messages effectively to the audience. Also, I realized the importance of an organized team and how every member in a group should take their roles seriously to complete a task with excellence. Lastly, I am now more knowledgeable on architecture and their importance in designing the buildings.
The aim of the project is to acquire knowledge about design process and development. We are required to design the landscape for the site that we are doing in project 2. However, we will have basic exposure to concept, analysis, master plan, costing, planting plan, construction and maintenance in this project.
The Brief
It's an individual work for this project. For our presentation boards, we are required to included:
I could not believe that I actually spent hours and hours on just six boards. Sometimes, things seem like they won't take a lot of time but they consume more time than expected.
From this project, I learnt a lot about the design process of landscaping and have better understanding on the basics in anatomy of a landscape project, regulations and maintenance in landscaping. I also learned how to think creatively and critically.
In this project, students are required to select one landed residence that has outdoor space within its boundary. Also, students are required to obtain the base plan of the residence. Individually, we are required to produce a site synthesis for the site.
The Brief
GROUP
In a group of 6, I teamed up with Sam, Monnie, Erica, Yi Chung and Tian Ji. After discussion, we decided to organize a site visit to Yi Chung's house and conduct a site survey. By conducting the site inventory and analysis, we are required to included research on the site location and context, topography, drainage, vegetation, mircoclimate, existing structure and views.
Site analysis was done so that we understand more about the potentials of the site, so we moved to our individual task. After gathering information about the site, I compiled my ideas and the collected data to produce my design solution, or known as site synthesis.
As a conclusion, this assignment gave me an opportunity to learn about the anatomy of landscape. While referring to collected data throughout the site visit , I learned to locate, extract and utilise the information effectively.Besides that, this assignment makes me more observant about the elements of the built environment around us.
The first project of Constructed Landscape is a comparative study of local case study with international case study. The topics are as follow:
National park
State park
Community park
Neighborhood park
Urban park
Metropolitan park
City park
Theme park
Linear park
Pocket park
Each group will be given the topic randomly. The topic given to my group is pocket park.
The Brief
There are 5 people in my group, namely Erica, Humii, Anwar, Andrew and I. We named our group "The Innovation Team". Our international case study is about Le saint Geran at Mauritius, while our local case study is about Rainforest, One Utama.
One Utama Rainforest
Le saint Geran, Mauritius
We are required to describe the characteristic, historical background, location, site context and activities that people frequently do in the park. However, we did the individual research based on the main five components after discussion.
Our PRESENTATION SLIDE
In order to gather information, I had to do many researches on the topic. Also, I had to understand my case studies and the definition of 'pocket park" through research via multiple medias.
Apart from that, we should not follow the advices of lecturers blindly and without our own rationality. Also, I knew more about the architects and design intention of parks from this topic. Besides that, we should really put some efforts on our presentation and also the slides.
